AIEduLead: Supporting Professional Competences in Higher Education through Ethical and Responsible AI-related Components across Euro-Mediterranean Partnerships

​AIEduLead is a 36-month Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) project that aims to strengthen professional competences in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) by promoting the ethical, responsible, and effective integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into teaching, learning, research, and institutional practices. It supports the digital transformation of higher education by enhancing AI competences, fostering responsible AI governance, and strengthening regional collaboration across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The project addresses key challenges facing higher education institutions, including varying levels of institutional readiness, limited AI competences among academic staff, the absence of ethical AI governance frameworks, and fragmented regional cooperation. To address these challenges, AIEduLead will develop a Euro-Mediterranean AI Competence Framework, conduct a comprehensive Baseline Study on AI readiness, deliver a certified Train-the-Trainer (TtT) Programme aligned with DigCompEdu and the principles of the EU AI Act, pilot AI-enhanced teaching methodologies, develop institutional guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of AI, and create a sustainable Euro-Mediterranean AI in Education Network to support long-term collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional development.

AIEduLead brings together thirteen partner organizations from six countries, including the European countries of Belgium, Spain, and Greece, and the Mediterranean countries of Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco. The consortium combines complementary expertise in higher education, quality assurance, educational technology, digital innovation, dissemination, policy development, and institutional capacity building, bringing together higher education institutions, industry partners, and public authorities to achieve the project’s objectives. By strengthening AI literacy, institutional capacity, and regional cooperation, AIEduLead will contribute to improving the quality, relevance, and resilience of higher education while promoting the ethical and responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence across higher education institutions in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The SMART project aims to modernize higher education in Energy and Environmental Sciences across Jordan and Tunisia by integrating artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum development. The project responds to pressing regional challenges, including energy transition, water scarcity, environmental degradation, and climate change, while addressing the gap between traditional higher education approaches, students’ increasing use of digital technologies, and the evolving skills required by the green labour market.

Through cooperation between European and South Mediterranean institutions, SMART will enhance academic and administrative capacities, strengthen digital infrastructure and governance, foster inclusive and accessible learning environments, and introduce data-driven and interdisciplinary approaches in key areas such as renewable energy, environmental monitoring, climate resilience, and sustainable resource management.

With a total project budget exceeding €673,000, the project allocates more than €74,000 to Applied Science Private University (ASU). The university is represented in the project by Professor Mohammad Ahmad Hamdan, who is the Main Contact Person. Through its active engagement in the implementation of the project’s activities, ASU will further enhance its international visibility and strengthen its role as an active partner in European Union-funded initiatives and international academic cooperation programmes.

Aligned with the priorities of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education programme, SMART contributes to digital transformation, environmental sustainability, inclusive education, institutional development, and stronger connections between universities, research institutions, society, and industry. The project will also establish sustainable and replicable models that extend beyond its lifetime, supporting long-term innovation and capacity building in higher education.
